An element of the overall goal of the NBC’s CSO program is to reduce the amount of stormwater entering the combined sewer system. By reducing stormwater flows into our system during a rain event, we increase the amount of capacity in our CSO collection tunnel and reduce the amount of combined sewer overflows to the waterways.
To reduce the impact of stormwater on the NBC sewer system, the sewer connection permit process requires Commercial/Industrial property owners to investigate stormwater mitigation measures, along with Best Management Practices (BMP), to manage stormwater runoff on site. These measures must be detailed to NBC in a Stormwater Mitigation Program.
Once the Stormwater Mitigation Plan is approved by the NBC, if it is necessary for some storm flow to still be directed into the NBC sewer system, the property owner must then apply for a stormwater permit which could allow the remaining stormwater to discharge into the NBC’s combined sewer system.
