The Narragansett Bay Commission will be conducting

The Narragansett Bay Commission will be conducting smoke testing investigations in the Providence/Cranston area next week. These investigations are being conducted to identify sources of extraneous water that discharge into its sanitary sewers.

The testing involves blowing white smoke into the sanitary sewer lines in the street and observing/recording where the smoke leaks out. The smoke is harmless, odorless, non-staining, and leaves no residue. A Material Safety Data Sheet can be provided upon request. The smoke will not enter your house or building unless there are defects in your sanitary plumbing. Although unlikely, should smoke enter your building, do not be alarmed. Simply open the windows, and then notify the EST Associates crew in the street at 617-212-6714 that smoke has entered your building. Please be assured that the smoke will disappear quickly. Prior to testing, you can reduce the chances of smoke entering your building by pouring about a gallon of water down each sink and flush each toilet in your home. This will allow water to fill each trap (bend in the piping under the fixture), which will in turn prevent the smoke from entering the building.

The smoke testing is being coordinated by the Narragansett Bay Commission’s engineering consultant, Tighe & Bond, and will be conducted by EST Associates, Inc. Representatives of these firms will carry photo identification and EST vehicles will be clearly labeled with the company name and phone number. Field crews will be on your street within the next week to perform this test on March 13th 2025. The hours for testing are between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Monday through Friday. The Fire and Police Departments are being notified of the smoke testing work locations.

A BIG shoutout and congratulations to both of our wastewater treatment facilities, Bucklin Point and Field’s Point for each receiving the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA) Peak Performance Silver Award for 2023.

The Peak Performance Award recognizes NACWA members facilities for excellence in permit compliance. The Silver Awards are presented to facilities with no more than five violations per calendar year.

Congratulations and thank you to all our staff that helped make this award possible, making sure our facilities are operating to their fullest!

Congratulations to our Assistant Director of Const

Congratulations to our Assistant Director of Construction and Engineering, Kathryn Kelly on receiving the Alfred E. Peloquin award from the New England Water Environment Association at the Annual Conference last month.

The Alfred E. Peloquin award recognizes an individual whose personal service has contributed to excellence in plant operations either directly at a treatment plant, or indirectly through assistance to plant operations personnel.

Kathryn has been a leading force for NBC’s Combined Sewer Overflow Project, leading to water quality improvements in the Providence and Seekonk Rivers, as well as further down the Bay.

Well deserved Kathryn, congratulations!

The Narragansett Bay Commission is proud to announce its thirtieth annual Environmental Merit Awards. 🏆

Each year, the Narragansett Bay Commission honors companies that have gone beyond compliance using pollution prevention techniques and approaches, have implemented stormwater mitigation technologies, and those companies that have achieved perfect compliance records. The future economic and environmental well- being of Rhode Island is dependent upon industry working together with environmental agencies like the Narragansett Bay Commission to reduce or eliminate waste. The Narragansett Bay Commission’s Environmental Merit Awards program provides an opportunity for companies to receive public recognition for operational advances behind the scenes that have helped protect the environment.

The Narragansett Bay Commission’s Environmental Merit Award winners set the standards for all regulated businesses. Other businesses are encouraged to achieve this level of success with the help of the Narragansett Bay Commission’s Pollution Prevention Program. The non-regulatory Pollution Prevention Program helps the industrial community find environmentally and economically sound ways of eliminating or reducing the generation of industrial wastes and pollutants.

Now accepting applications for the 2025 Earth Day

Now accepting applications for the 2025 Earth Day River Restoration Grants. Grants from $250-$1000 will be available to community groups to help fund local Earth Day Clean-ups this year. 🌎

In 2024, 16 local organizations and hundreds of volunteers from these organizations gathered to remove thousands of pounds of tires and debris from the beds and banks of rivers, ponds and shorelines, as well as creating restoration and beautification projects within the NBC service area. We look forward to seeing what are grant recipients will do in 2025!

Deadline to apply is Friday, February 14th.

The Narragansett Bay Commission’s Environmental

The Narragansett Bay Commission’s Environmental Monitoring Section collects and analyzes over 26,000 water samples from treatment plants, industries, and our receiving waters every year. NBC’s EM section tracks the levels of nutrients, totals suspended solids, biochemical oxygen demand, fecal coliform and other water quality parameters throughout the NBC service area.

Environmental Monitoring works closely with the Technical Analysis and Compliance (TAC) section. The scientists in TAC are responsible for developing special study procedures, reviewing existing protocols, and analyzing the monitoring data for trends. That data is available on snapshot.narrabay.com

You will see these environmentalists taking samples from the urban rivers, monitoring manholes, or on the Research Vessel Data Stream testing the water in Narragansett Bay. Their efforts ensure that the NBC has the sound science necessary to achieve our goal of a clean bay today.

The Narragansett Bay Commission’s Pretreatment P

The Narragansett Bay Commission’s Pretreatment Program protects our rivers and bay from potentially toxic pollutants released by industry. This is important because our wastewater treatment facilities use sensitive biological organisms to take water from dirty to clean.

Since 1982 industrial toxins and heavy metal discharges to Narragansett Bay have been reduced by 98% thanks to the NBC Pretreatment Program. Additionally, the Providence and Seekonk Rivers have been removed from the EPA’s list of impaired waters for toxic pollutants.

That’s good news for Rhode Island!

Congratulations to NBC’s Construction and Bucklin Point Operations teams for the successful installation of the new Return Activated Sludge pipe that will service 2 new clarifiers. Thanks to precise planning the job took exactly 8 hours to complete and the plant remained fully operational.

These projects are fundamental to NBC’s mission to protect and enhance our rivers and bay.

Starting in October, the Narragansett Bay Commissi

Starting in October, the Narragansett Bay Commission (NBC) will migrate from its current billing system to a new system. The new payment system will offer additional payment options.

All customers, even customers who currently use on-line bill payment, must re-register through the new NBC customer portal to use AutoPay or paperless billing. The customer portal is accessible through the NBC’s website, www.narrabay.com.

Any customer who registered in the former online payment system will receive an email close to the go-live date providing them a link to change their password. The link will route the customer to the new online payment portal where they may follow the prompts to become re registered.

The new billing system will offer NBC customers the option of paying with digital wallets, like PayPal, Venmo, Apple Pay and Google Pay; with any major credit card; and in-store payments at Walmart, CVS, and Walgreens. Customers also have the option to enroll in AutoPay to pay their NBC bill automatically on time each month.

Customers may still elect to receive a paper copy of their bill and have the traditional options of paying via cash or check.

Congratulations to NBC’s Construction and Bucklin Point Operations teams for the successful installation of the new Return Activated Sludge pipe that will service 2 new clarifiers. Thanks to precise planning the job took exactly 8 hours to complete and the plant remained fully operational.

These projects are fundamental to NBC’s mission to protect and enhance our rivers and bay.

Starting in October, the Narragansett Bay Commissi

Starting in October, the Narragansett Bay Commission (NBC) will migrate from its current billing system to a new system. The new payment system will offer additional payment options.

All customers, even customers who currently use on-line bill payment, must re-register through the new NBC customer portal to use AutoPay or paperless billing. The customer portal is accessible through the NBC’s website, www.narrabay.com.

Any customer who registered in the former online payment system will receive an email close to the go-live date providing them a link to change their password. The link will route the customer to the new online payment portal where they may follow the prompts to become re registered.

The new billing system will offer NBC customers the option of paying with digital wallets, like PayPal, Venmo, Apple Pay and Google Pay; with any major credit card; and in-store payments at Walmart, CVS, and Walgreens. Customers also have the option to enroll in AutoPay to pay their NBC bill automatically on time each month.

Customers may still elect to receive a paper copy of their bill and have the traditional options of paying via cash or check.
