  • The Bucklin Point and Field’s Point WWTFs received Silver Awards from the National Association of Clean Water Agencies, which indicates fewer than five permit violations over the last calendar year.
  • The Narragansett Bay Commission's green stormwater infrastructure project at Macomber Field in Central Falls receives the STORMY Award from the New England Water Environment Association, the American Public Works Association, and the New England Water Works Association for the most creative stormwater solution in New England.

  • The USEPA selects the Narragansett Bay Commission to participate in the Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (WIFIA) loan program for CSO Phase III, making $270M available in loan funds. The NBC is one of only 39 entities invited to apply for WIFIA funding, and the only entity in New England.
  • The Standard & Poor’s rating agency confirms a AA- rating for NBC’s WIFIA loan. The Kroll Bond Rating Agency assigns a AA rating to the NBC.

  • Narragansett Bay Commission announces an agreement with Green Development, Inc. (formerly Wind Energy Development, Inc.) to construct two solar energy farms to enhance the NBC’s sustainable energy portfolio, achieving essentially net zero energy use by the end of 2018.

  • Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services assigned its ‘A+’ standard long-term rating, and stable outlook, to Narragansett Bay Commission, R.I.’s revenue bonds and affirmed its ‘A+’ Standard & Poor’s underlying rating (SPUR), with a stable outlook, on the commission’s wastewater system revenue bonds.
  • Narragansett Bay Commission wins National Public Education Award from the National Association of Clean Water Agencies for the classroom program, Woon Watershed Explorers.  
  • Both the Field's Point and Bucklin Point facilities achieve Silver Awards for excellent effluent quality from the National Association of Clean Water Agencies.

  • Narragansett Bay Commission wins a Bell Ringer Award from the Publicity Club of New England for the Breakthrough for Clean Water in Rhode Island press event.
  • The State of Rhode Island passes legislation requiring the use of mercury amalgam separators in dental offices. The legislation credits the Narragansett Bay Commission’s groundbreaking work in mercury reduction as its impetus.

  • Narragansett Bay Commission wins Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association for Fiscal Year 2003 Budget. In addition, the NBC's bond rating by Standard & Poor's is upgraded to an A+.

2002

  • Narragansett Bay Commission Executive Director Paul Pinault, P.E., elected President of the Association of Metropolitan Sewerage Agencies (AMSA), a national group of wastewater treatment facilities that serve the majority of the sewered population in the United States, and collectively treat and reclaim more than 17 billion gallons of wastewater each day. AMSA maintains a key role in the development of environmental legislation, and works closely with federal regulatory agencies in the implementation of environmental programs.

2001

  • Narragansett Bay Commission breaks ground on Phase I of its Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Abatement Project, the most important clean water project in Rhode Island and the state's largest public works project.

2000

  • Narragansett Bay Commission receives Association of Metropolitan Sewerage Agencies National Public Service Award for NBC's support of the 1999 Shellfish Transplant Program, which successfully moved 800,000 pounds of quahogs from restricted fishing waters in Narragansett Bay to unrestricted waters.

1999

  • Narragansett Bay Commission awarded $500,000 EMPACT (Environmental Monitoring for Public Access and Community Tracking) grant from the US EPA to develop a program for providing real-time water quality data to the public.
  • The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management issued a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the Narragansett Bay Commission's Combined Sewer Overflow Abatement Plan.

1998

  • Narragansett Bay Commission Pretreatment Program receives US EPA's National Pretreatment Excellence Award in the Large Significant Industrial Users category. This award honors those organizations that are demonstrating their commitment to the protection and improvement of the nation's waters through their operation and exemplary pretreatment programs.
  • Narragansett Bay Commission receives Association of Metropolitan Sewerage Agencies' Public Information & Education Award for documentary that chronicles the history of Rhode Island's largest wastewater treatment facilities and the important role they play in our community.

The NBC Pretreatment Program has been recognized twice by the U.S. EPA as being the "Best Pretreatment Program in the Nation", receiving these awards in 1990 and 1998.
