Water Column Profiles

October 30, 2024

Water column profiles were conducted at seven locations in the Providence and Seekonk River estuaries on October 30, 2024 using a Seabird Electronics profiler. In the five days leading up to the survey, no precipitation was recorded at T.F. Green.  Water column stratification varied between the sites this week from well-mixed at most sites to weakly stratified at Phillipsdale Landing.

Dissolved oxygen (DO) conditions were not observed to be below the hypoxia threshold (2.9 mg/L) at any site profiled this week. The highest fluorescence recorded this week was measured around 1 meter below the surface at Phillipsdale Landing.

Water column profiles were conducted at six locations in the Providence River estuary on October 23, 2024 using a Seabird Electronics profiler. A seventh site, Point Street Bridge, was visited, but no data was collected due to an equipment malfunction. In the five days leading up to the survey, no precipitation was recorded at T.F. Green.  Water column stratification varied between the sites this week from well-mixed at Pawtuxet Cove to moderately stratified at India Point Park.

Dissolved oxygen (DO) conditions were not observed to be below the hypoxia threshold (2.9 mg/L) at any site profiled this week. The highest fluorescence recorded this week was measured around 2.5 meters below the surface at Conimicut Point.

August 7, 2024

Water column profiles were conducted at seven locations in the Providence and Seekonk River estuaries on August 7, 2024 using a Seabird Electronics profiler. In the five days leading up to the survey, 0.95 inches of precipitation were recorded at T.F. Green. Water column stratification at the sites varied from weakly stratified at Pawtuxet Cove and Edgewood Yacht Club, to strongly stratified at Conimicut Point.

Dissolved oxygen (DO) conditions were below the hypoxia threshold (2.9 mg/L) in the lower portion of the water column at Edgewood Yacht Club, in the middle and lower portions of the water column at Pomham Rocks, and in all portions of the water column (upper, middle and lower) at India Point Park and Phillipsdale Landing. The highest fluorescence readings for the week were measured around 2 meters below the surface at Edgewood Yacht Club.

July 23-29, 2023

Water column profiles were conducted at eight locations in the Providence and Seekonk River estuaries on July 26, 2023 using a Seabird Electronics profiler. In the three days leading up to the survey, there were 0.10 inches of precipitation recorded at T.F. Green. Moderate density stratification was observed at Edgewood Shoal; all other sites still exhibited strong stratification this week.

Dissolved oxygen (DO) conditions were below the hypoxia threshold (2.9 mg/L) in the middle and/or lower half of the water column at all sites surveyed. Fluorescence was moderately elevated at the surface of most sites this week, but relatively low at Phillipsdale Landing and India Point Park.

Dissolved oxygen (DO) conditions were below the hypoxia threshold (2.9 mg/L) in the middle and/or lower half of the water column at all sites surveyed. Fluorescence was moderately elevated at the surface of Conimicut Point West, Edgewood Yacht Club, and Bullock Reach Buoy this week and relatively low at the other sites.

July 9-15, 2023

Water column profiles were conducted at seven locations in the Providence and Seekonk River estuaries on July 12, 2023 using a Seabird Electronics profiler. In the three days leading up to the survey, there were 1.91 inches of precipitation recorded at T.F. Green. Strong density stratification was observed at all sites surveyed this week.

Dissolved oxygen (DO) conditions were above the hypoxia threshold (2.9 mg/L) at Conimicut Point West; all other sites surveyed had hypoxic conditions in the middle and/or lower half of the water column. Fluorescence was moderately elevated at the surface of Conimicut Point West this week and relatively low at all other sites.

July 2-8, 2023

Water column profiles were conducted at eight locations in the Providence and Seekonk River estuaries on July 5, 2023 using a Seabird Electronics profiler. In the three days leading up to the survey, there were 1.25 inches of precipitation recorded at T.F. Green. Strong density stratification was observed at all sites surveyed this week.

Dissolved oxygen (DO) conditions were above the hypoxia threshold (2.9 mg/L) at Bullock Reach Buoy and Conimicut Point West; all other sites surveyed had hypoxic conditions in the lower half of the water column. Fluorescence was moderately elevated at the surface of Bullock Reach Buoy and Conimicut Point West this week and low at all other sites.

June 25-July 1, 2023

Water column profiles were conducted at eight locations in the Providence and Seekonk River estuaries on June 28, 2023 using a Seabird Electronics profiler. In the three days leading up to the survey and the morning of, there were 0.92 inches of precipitation recorded at T.F. Green. Strong density stratification was observed at most sites surveyed this week, with Bullock Reach Buoy and Conimicut Point West exhibiting moderate density stratification.
