Water Clarity

March 26-April 1, 2023

Water clarity was measured at seven locations in the Providence River and Seekonk River estuaries on March 29. Rainfall totaling 0.74 inches was recorded at TF Green in the five days prior to the survey. Secchi depth averaged 3.2 meters, compared to 2.2 meters on the previous survey (March 22). The lowest clarity this week (2.7 meters) was measured at India Point Park, while the greatest clarity (3.7 meters) was measured at Point St. Bridge. There was a general north-to-south gradient of increasing water clarity among the sites this week.​

March 19-25, 2023

Water clarity was measured at seven locations in the Providence River and Seekonk River estuaries on March 22. Rainfall totaling 0.20 inches was recorded at TF Green in the five days prior to the survey. Secchi depth averaged 2.2 meters, compared to 1.6 meters on the previous survey (March 22). The lowest clarity this week (1.2 meters) was measured at Pawtuxet Cove, while the greatest clarity (2.6 meters) was measured at Bullock Reach, Conimicut Point, and Phillipsdale Landing. There was a general north-to-south gradient of increasing water clarity among the sites this week.​

March 12-18, 2023

​Water clarity was measured at five locations in the Providence River and Seekonk River estuaries on March 16. Rainfall totaling 3.2 inches was recorded at TF Green in the five days prior to the survey. Secchi depth averaged 1.6 meters, compared to 2.8 meters on the previous survey (February 22). The lowest clarity this week (1.1 meters) was measured at India Point Park, while the greatest clarity (2.2 meters) was measured at Bullock Reach. There was no clear north-to-south gradient in water clarity among the sites this week. ​

February 19-25, 2023

​Water clarity was measured at seven locations in the Providence River estuary on February 22. Rainfall totaling 0.52 inches was recorded at TF Green in the five days prior to the survey. Secchi depth averaged 2.8 meters, compared to 2.7 meters on the previous survey (January 18). The lowest clarity this week (2.6 meters) was measured at India Point Park, while the greatest clarity (3.0 meters) was measured at Conimicut Point. There was no clear north-to-south gradient in water clarity among the sites this week. ​

February 19-25, 2023

​Water clarity was measured at seven locations in the Providence River estuary on February 22. Rainfall totaling 0.52 inches was recorded at TF Green in the five days prior to the survey. Secchi depth averaged 2.8 meters, compared to 2.7 meters on the previous survey (January 18). The lowest clarity this week (2.6 meters) was measured at India Point Park, while the greatest clarity (3.0 meters) was measured at Conimicut Point. There was no clear north-to-south gradient in water clarity along the sites this week. 

January 15-21, 2023

Water clarity was measured at six locations in the Providence River and Seekonk River estuaries on January 18. Rainfall totaling 0.52 inches was recorded at TF Green in the five days prior to the survey. Secchi depth averaged 2.7 meters, compared to 3.3 meters on the previous survey (January 10). The lowest clarity this week (2.6 meters) was measured at India Point Park, Phillipsdale Landing, and Pomham Rocks, while the greatest clarity (2.9 meters) was measured at Bullock Reach and Conimicut Point. There was a general north-to-south gradient of increasing water clarity among the sites this week. ​

January 8-14, 2023

​Water clarity was measured at six locations in the Providence River estuary on January 10. Rainfall totaling 0.18 inches was recorded at TF Green in the five days prior to the survey. Secchi depth averaged 3.3 meters, compared to 4.2 meters on the previous survey (November 29, 2022). The lowest clarity this week (2.6 meters) was measured at India Point Park, while the greatest clarity (4.2 meters) was measured at Conimicut Point. There was a general north-to-south gradient of increasing water clarity among the sites this week. ​
