FOR THE COMMUNITY

Take a tour

Take a tour of one of the country’s best-operated and maintained wastewater treatment facilities, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency.

The Field’s Point facility, in Providence, is one of the country’s oldest and the state’s largest wastewater treatment facility. Or visit the state’s second-largest facility in East Providence, the  Bucklin Point Wastewater Treatment Facility. At both facilities, visitors will learn how their community’s wastewater is processed, cleaned, and returned to Narragansett Bay. Visitors will understand how wastewater treatment is a vital link in the overall water quality chain that we depend on.

Watershed explorers!

The Narragansett Bay Commission’s Watershed Explorers (NBCWE) program is a free, comprehensive, hands-on environmental education program that cultivates students and teachers as stewards of their local watersheds through monthly in-class lessons, two water quality testing field trips, and a culminating environmental education symposium which takes place at the end of each program year. Every year, NBC staff educates over five hundred elementary school students and teachers from ten school districts located in the NBC service areas. Although the lessons may change slightly from year to year to meet new state and federal education standards, the message remains the same: environmental stewardship. Through this program, students and teachers obtain a greater appreciation for their local watershed, and in turn use that appreciation to educate others about the watershed and how to protect it.

MR. CAN!

How do we fight the Grease Beasts? We call upon MR. CAN, the Narragansett Bay Commission’s grease-busting superhero.

While the Grease Beasts are creating ickiness all over town with their clogging activities, MR. CAN solidifies the Beasts with his cooling wand, and then disposes of the grease properly in the trash can.

This protects the wastewater treatment facilities and leads to cleaner water in Narragansett Bay and our local rivers!

Poster contest

Each year, the Narragansett Bay Commission sponsors a poster contest for elementary students in grades K-6. Although the theme of the poster contest varies from year to year, the focus on the importance of clean water remains constant. One winning artist in each grade level receives a $100 cash prize and all winning entries are featured on the NBC calendar, which is distributed to all elementary schools in the NBC service area, as well as to all elected officials. In addition, the winning posters are exhibited at a local art gallery.

For more information on this year’s contest, contact the Public Affairs Office, nbcpr@narrabay.com

Science Fair

Each year, the Narragansett Bay Commission conducts a special judging at the RI State Science Fair, and honors students whose clean water projects show excellence in scientific inquiry. Winners receive a cash prize and special recognition at an NBC Board of Commissioners meeting.
